How to Perform WiFi Network Measurements Using a GPS Device on Acrylic

With Acrylic WiFi Professional it is possible to use an NMEA compatible GPS device to support WiFi network measurements. By using a GPS device, we can save captured WiFi network traffic as a pcap format file with the wireless network packet position.

Pcap file data can be later used to generate WiFi network reports and, if the GPS device was activated during the wireless network capture, to display WiFi network position on a Google Earth map and represent online measurements over it.

To perform a WiFi measurement using a GPS device, you only need to connect a GPS card to a USB port or via Bluetooth, configure COM port and adjust device connection speed (usually default settings are fine), and click on the Start button. Since Bluetooth communications operate on the 2.4Ghz frequency band, just like most WiFi networks, the use of Bluetooth GPS card can cause some minor interference and then affect the measurements. This should be considered only for the analysis of RF interferences.

After a few seconds, or minutes, depending on how long it takes for the GPS device to capture the coverage area, Acrylic will show the current GPS position (longitude and latitude) and signal accuracy in meters.
